Mandolin Mountain
The most vibrant mandolin orchestra in Finland, Mandolin Mountain aka MaMo is founded in Jyväskylä at the end of 2007.
The orchestra’s repertoire is, in short, extensive: MaMo’s trademark is from the beginning there was an abundance and variety of styles. In addition to original compositions by Jouni Koskimäki, MaMo has played mandolin music classics from all over the world – orchestra has also interpreted a lot of classical music e.g. Bach, Händel, Domenico Scarlatti, Brahms and Ravel. In addition, MaMo has also e.g. played jazz (e.g. Django Reinhard), bluegrass, klezmer, Brazilian Choros, rock (Beatles, Zappa) Balkan Region music & Celtic Reels and jigs.
In recent years, the composition has also established a violin. As other instruments, cello and flute are heard the most. MaMo’s line-up has always been luminous singers, so there will also be singing at the concerts.
MaMo has been conducting since the beginning. Jouni Koskimäki, who had a long career as a lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of Jyväskylä, Koskimäki has made all the arrangements and compositions of the repertoire.
MaMo has performed at major festivals both in Finland and abroad. Abroad: in 2016, MaMo headlined Tallinn’s Saku Mandolin Festival. 2015 MaMo successfully visited the Spanish at the La Coruna Festival (a total of eight concerts). In 2014, MaMo had the honour of performing at the world’s largest the mandolin festival, Bruchsal in Germany. The orchestra was received with great enthusiasm in Germany: MaMo was the only one of the 74 orchestras and artists allowed to play the encore! The most recent trip abroad was to the 2023 Venice International Mandolin Festival.
Finnish festivals include e.g. Tampere Beatles Happening 2017 and Haapavesi Folk 2010, 2011 (this concert was recorded by YLE 1) and 2022. In 2019, MaMo was involved in the composition of Jouni Koskimäki in the University of Jyväskylä’s Promotional Composition together with the Musica Choir and the University Symphony Orchestra. MaMo collaborated with the Musica Choir also in 2018, when MaMo had two 10-year anniversary concerts in Jyväskylä. In the autumn of 2023, MaMo had two successful 15-year anniversary concerts as well, also in Jyväskylä.
From the very beginning, the orchestra’s slogan has been our guiding star: MaMo for sure Unique experience!
